Editor and Host of Cafe Holistic, Matt Rosenberg opens up and shares his experience of The Dark Night of The Soul.
The Dark Night of The Soul is a period of prolonged suffering characterized by strong grasping and aversions towards creations of the Ego(Mind). During this time a person experiences intense aloneness, depression, and suffering.
Often times the person goes on with their daily life and family and friends are not aware of the magnitude of the experience.
It is this time during the Night of the Soul that profound Spiritual Growth can occur. The Ego can be surrendered and dissolved allowing a new experience to arise. In the quieting of the mind and the stillness of silence one can experience one’s true nature. A deep peace pervades in the silence and an interconnectedness arises that can not be adequately put into words, but rather experienced. This is what is referred to Realization, Enlightenment, or Samadhi.
One does not need to experience the Dark Night of the Soul to reach realization, but the suffering an efficient accelerator of spiritual growth. As Ram Dass says, “Suffering is a Motivator”.
“The highest form of spiritual practice is Self Observation without Judgment.” Swami Kripalu
